November 2009--Elite Member of the Month--Donna Christy

Where are you from, originally and what brought you to Los Angeles?
I'm from New Jersey originally and came out soon after college because I always wanted to live in California.

What style of music would you say you do?
I have done many styles as a songwriter from pop, dance, country, r&b and rock, but my latest CD is alternative rock. As a singer, I prefer to sing rock and pop r&b

What do you enjoy best - songwriting or performing and why?
I don't know if I like either one better, but with performing I pretty much know how that's gonna go. If I have an audience that's responsive to what we're doing, there is nothing that feels as good as that. When it comes to songwriting, it's always something new because I don't know what I'm going to write or how I'm going to write it. I'm making something out of nothing so it's always very rewarding when I finish a song and it's good.

Who are your musical influences?
I'm probably the only writer I know who doesn't have direct influence of one other artist. I can't say how it all happened because I started singing at 2 years old, as soon as I could talk. I started writing at 13, something that would have started sooner, but I kept blocking it. Finally, I dreamed a song, got up and went to the piano and played it down. It was like a message that I was supposed to be a songwriter. I like many styles of music and if I need to write in a certain style, I'll listen to it, not any particular artist, and then I'll write in that style.

Describe your favorite song you have written and why is it so special to you?
It's a pop/rock song called "Memphis To L.A." which is on my CD "Just Another Day" . It's a true story and another song that happened naturally where I sat at the piano and just played and sang it down. I am always amazed when that happens because it seems like I'm having some kind of help from the beyond! The song is very haunting, sad and memorable. I love the way the bridge builds the song.

What are your goals for the next 5 years musically speaking?
I am planning to get a lot of songs placed and make a lot of money....:)

Tell us about your recordings and what's in store next.
I don't know what's in store next, I never really plan anything because it never seems to work out when I do. Usually, I'll just get a thought and act on it immediately, which is way my latest CD came about. I wasn't planning on releasing a new CD at all, but I put my rock band Hemlok Bay together and released "Just Another Day".

Where can we buy your music?

What are your views about where the music industry is heading in your community, or on a global level?
There are good and bad things about this and that is that anyone can make a CD and put it for sale....that's the good and bad of it! I thank God for music libraries and cable stations.

Anything pertinent you'd like to say about Songsalive! ?
I love Songaslive and am glad I joined it. My first submission resulted in a placement of the song "Just Another Day" in a movie. Unfortunately, the production company ran out of money and the movie hasn't gotten released yet.
I just wish I could attend more of the events, but I'm a busy performer and frequently out of town. It's a great way to meet other songwriters, make connections and get some feedback on your songs and it was lovely to meet Gilli who is the epitome of indie artist success.

September 2009 Songsalive Member of the Month--Ron Greene

1. Where are you from, originally and what brought you to your current city? I'm originally from Phoenix, Arizona. Moved to Coeur d'Alene, ID (30min from Spokane, WA) about 15 years ago with my then wife (who was born and raised in the area) and our first child.

2. What style of music would you say you do? I would call it acoustic based pop with a touch of soul & rock.

3. What do you enjoy best - songwriting or performing and why? I would say I enjoy performing best.. I love the feeling of connecting with an audience, having them connect with a song and either physically or emotionally being moved. I also like connecting with the band (if the band is there).. and just getting lost in the moment musically.

4. Who are your musical influences? I have wide, diverse, group of influences... Stevie Wonder, Dann Huff, Prince, Edwin McCain, Sarah McClaughlin, George Benson, Dave Matthews, Whiteheart

5. Describe your favorite song you have written and why is it so special to you? At the moment it's a song called Runaway - it's on the EP I'm working on now. Basically it tells the story of a couple who are trying to come to grips with their love... without giving too much away (I like for the listener to identify with the song, but also have it apply to where they are at) I feel it's sort of like the guy telling his woman I'm in this for the long haul. The reason it's special to me is because I struggled with this song (and love in my life) for a little while and then all of a sudden the bridge came to me (like waves rolling out to sea your love washes over me. I'm drowning in this tidal wave, I'm jumping in all the way.) and the song just came together from there. It sort of ran in life with what I was going through at the moment.

6. What are your goals for the next 5 years musically speaking? I'd like to finish this EP and start touring nationally, break into the college campus market, and get music into film/tv or publishing.

7. Tell us about your recordings and what's in store next. I have one CD - Sketches, it was released in 2008. I feel it's a really solid first CD. I played all the guitars & keyboards, had my producer play the bass and did some programming and we had a few guys in for drums.. so basically it was home grown. The EP I'm working on is more of a hands off aproach (as far as I'm concerned) and having some other guys come in and do other instrumentation. I'd really like to cut a CD with my band (The Right) and what kind of musical direction that would go.

8. Where can we buy your music? iTunes, CDBaby, AmazonMP3, Rhapsody music, all over really.. even on my website www.rongreenetunes.com

9. What are your views about where the music industry is heading in your community, or on a global level? Well I know CD sales are down, and there's been a little lag in concert sales (unless your HUGE), but I'm still optimistic about music. People are always wanting to hear music in the background of their lives, so I feel if you are true to yourself and keep pushing your own creative limits... if the music is good, it'll get into the hands of whoever it needs to get to.

10. Anything pertinent you'd like to say about Songsalive! I'm really excited about Songsalive!, I'm looking forward to meeting and collaborating with some great people. And I'm looking forward to learning more about the craft and business of music and putting that knowledge to good use.

Karen and Amy Jones--Songsalive Members of the Month for August 2009

1. Where are you from, originally and what brought you to your current city? We were born in raised in Easton, Pennsylvania, but we wanted to be closer to a larger city without moving too far from our fanbase...so we ended up in Philadelphia. We've discovered that Philly has a decent music scene and offers alot of opportunities - if you're willing to go out and take advantage of them. We've been lucky to get some radio play from WXPN, a huge proponent of local and emerging artists.

2. What style of music would you say you do? We write and play harmony-heavy acoustic rock songs.

3. What do you enjoy best - songwriting or performing and why? Amy would probably say songwriting, while I get more of a rush from performing in front of a crowd.

4. Who are your musical influences? As far as influences go, we're all over the place. Tori Amos, Alice in Chains, Radiohead, A Perfect Circle. Those are the first four that come to mind. We're just as happy listening to a Loreena McKennitt album as we are a Soundgarden record. Either/or, depending on the day.

5. Describe your favorite song you have written and why is it so special to you. I love The Dream Man (actually mostly written by my sister Amy, with some melody lines contributed by me) because it's a departure from the types of songs I write. Amy is big into Neil Gaiman and was inpired to write it after reading his Sandman graphic novel. I'm not a comic book fan, but the lyrics still speak to me and are so lush and the harmony in the chorus slays me. No matter how many times I hear the song or perform it, I never get tired of it.

6. What are your goals for the next 5 years musically speaking? Our immediate focus is to continue building our fanbase by playing as many quality gigs as possible, and we're planning to do our first multi-state tour later this year. Next year, we're planning to release our second CD and tour the East Coast in support of that. Going forward in the 2-5 year range, our main goal is to do everything we can to create consistent regional/national buzz and start playing major festivals.

7. Tell us about your recordings and what's in store next. We just released our debut album Daphne in Winter in July 2009. It took us a long time, but we wanted to get it right - and we're so proud of the songs and how it turned out. We're back in the studio working on the bones of our follow-up CD, which we hope to release in mid-to-late 2010.

8. Where can we buy your music? The Daphne in Winter CD is available for $10 at www.karenandamyrock.com and on iTunes, Amazon, Rhapsody, Napster and most other online music sites.

9. Anything pertinent you'd like to say about Songsalive! Songsalive! continues to be a great resource for independent musicians and songwriters. We look forward to exploring its many opportunities that will help us move toward our goals over the next couple of years.

Songsalive June Member of the Month---Katie Garibaldi

1. Where are you from, originally and what brought you to San Francisco ?

I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. I love the SF Bay and I plan on staying here!

2. What style of music would you say you do?

I would call it country-pop. But I think a lot of my songs are eclectic and fall into different categories.

3. What do you enjoy best - songwriting or performing and why?

I love doing both but performing is probably what I enjoy best because getting the chance to connect with others through my music is an awesome feeling and I feel like performing my music is a big part of who I am and what I was meant to do.

4. Who are your musical influences?

I grew up listening to classics. When I was young, I got into the pop thing and Mariah Carey's "Hero" made me want to be a singer outside of just my own room! Then I picked up the guitar and Jewel became such an eye-opener for me. I realized I could write my own songs and Jewel influenced my writing a lot in the early days. From then on, I have been influenced by a wide variety of singer-songwriters and bands, including Faith Hill, The Wallflowers, Patty Griffin, Jonny Lang, and Matchbox Twenty.

5. Describe your favorite song you have written and why is it so special to you

I don't really have a favorite song because each one I've written has its own story behind it and each has its own place in my heart. I've noticed that my listeners have really locked on to my songs "A Love Without Chains" and "Falling For You" and those songs have sort of become my signature songs. They're also some of my favorites to play.

6. What are your goals for the next 5 years musically speaking?

My goals are to promote my new album Next Ride Out as much as possible and tour with it. I hope to get radio play and song placement on TV/film and my main goal is for Next Ride Out to get me to my next level in my career where I can be touring more regularly. There will most likely be another album after that within 5 years and my hope is also to record a live album.

7. Tell us about your recordings and what's in store next.

Next Ride Out is my sixth full-length album and I'm getting ready to release it June 20, 2009. I'm really, really excited about this album and also very proud of it. It's the first time I recorded outside of my home studio and worked with a producer. Michael Molenda produced the album and we recorded it at his studio Tiki Town in Mill Valley, Ca. There are five songs on the CD that have never been recorded before and there are five songs that are songs that have been recorded on past records, but they are new versions of the songs. This album is full of things my listeners have never heard before, on my past CDs, like electric guitar and a string arrangement on "Falling For You." I had so much fun making this album and really learned a lot in the studio. I can't wait for everybody to finally hear it!

8. Where can we buy your music?

You can find my music on my website www.katiegaribaldi.com, CDBaby.com, and on iTunes.

9. What are your views about where the music industry is heading in your community, or on a global level?

I think there is a pretty big movement of 'new' singer/songwriters in the San Francisco area who are working their bums off and making buzz around my community. We're a tight knit group so when we play in the city doing shows together, usually people recognize our names because of the networking we have been doing with each other. I don't really have time to think about the 'music industry' as far as the big labels go because I'm too busy working over here on my indie level! ;) But I think the feeling of the big all mighty music industry is diminishing because people don't need to get signed to a big label to have a successful music career, and it's been that way for a while now. The appearance of iTunes where people can download and buy your music with just one click has faded the need to have a label release a full album. You can also upload a video on YouTube of a performance and promote that on your own to turn people on to your music. Also, the rise of social networks like Myspace have changed things big time for indie artists as well, giving them a substantial medium to get their music out to their audience and to be able to market better on their own without a label. Having said that, I don't necessarily think bigger labels are a bad thing. Some are right for some artists and some aren't for others. It's all very individual. A lot of people think my goal is to get on a label because they still associate a label with success. But success is measured different for everyone. My goal is actually to be able to do my music full time and support myself with it. If I can climb my way up and do that the indie way, then I'm happy with that. If a label comes along that is right for me, then that's good too. Labels just mean you have some people helping you out and representing you. You still have to do a lot of work!

10. Anything pertinent you'd like to say about Songsalive!

I think Songsalive! is a wonderful organization for artists and I'm excited to be a part of it!

Incredible sixth album release for 25 year old, Katie Garibaldi, Bay Area singer/songwriter

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Releases Her Sixth CD, Next Ride Out

San Francisco, CA — Living Dream Music announces the release of Next Ride Out, by San Francisco Bay Area independent music artist, Katie Garibaldi.

Celebrating the release of her new album, Katie will be performing at Broadway Studios in the North Beach district of San Francisco on Saturday, June 20th, with guest performances by local artists Jesse Brewster and Welcome Matt. The new CD, Next Ride Out, will be available for purchase on the night for the first time. The release show will also raise awareness for the San Francisco non-profit organization Muttville, which creates better lives for older dogs through rescue, foster and hospice. For advance tickets, go to www.brownpapertickets.com/event/66793 and more details of the night at the end of this release. Katie Garibaldi's new CD will be available for sale from June 20 at www.katiegaribaldi.com, iTunes, Amazon mp3 and various online stores. Her CD is available for review by media, and the artist is available for interviews. Contact details at the end of this release.

Katie Garibaldi’s new sixth full-length album features ten original soul-satisfying tracks, comprised of five brand new songs and five previously recorded songs that are smacked up with fresh arrangements and performances. The album title, Next Ride Out, references the lyrics of Katie’s song “Home,” which is on her 2006 release, Fallen Angel. The lyrics pay respect to the past, given that half the songs on the new album have been recorded on previous projects, but the title also implies a look into the future, with new songs as well as a detectably revamped sound. “Next Ride Out is a nod to my past and a peek into the next chapter of my life,” says the songwriter. “For this album, I’ve written songs about real love, coming together in a relationship, and the gray area of a broken heart still in love. I’m always evolving as an artist. Always growing.”

The ten tracks mainly focus on relationships, love, and pain, as the songwriter is best known for, but the songs also carry a bit more humor, vulnerability, and self-discovery than her past work has shown. Maturity, both musically and emotionally, is evident, and the artist gives us more heart and guts than ever before. The sound is reminiscent of Americana with a twist of sparkling pop. Sweet and spicy, and full of heart. Michael Molenda, a noted producer, engineer, and editor-in-chief of Guitar Player magazine, produced the album at Tiki Town Studios in Mill Valley, Ca. The studio has been home to many major label artists, as well as U.S. and European indie artists. Electric guitars make their first appearance on a Katie Garibaldi album, performed by the producer. Molenda and Garibaldi seem to be a perfect producer-artist match in the studio, as proven by the tracks, which showcase the artist’s vocal dynamics. The singer’s rich voice is punctuated by noteworthy phrasing, something that has not been as obvious in her past recordings. Katie reflects, “the most important thing I learned from working with Mike Molenda in the studio is that as a singer, you need to be able to tell a story to the listener. You can’t just sing the melody. You have to sing the lyrics like you’re telling a story. Once I opened up to that, I believe I gave my songs a whole new meaning just by the subtleties in my vocals.”

Next Ride Out is altogether vibrant and rich with lively performances, from strong country-esque tunes (like “Hey, Hey Darlin’” and “Nothing Good Lasts”) to upbeat catchy pop treasures (including “Say The Word” and “A Love Without Chains”), to moving ballads, including the song “Falling For You” (one of the songs that was rerecorded from a previous release). It stands out as the “live” track on the album, featuring strings, harmonious bass lines, and Katie’s acoustic guitar fingerpicking. This is a heart-tugging gem sure to grab every listener’s attention. The album also includes an enjoyable re-creation of the singer’s song “Went Too Far (Foot In My Mouth),” which Katie fondly refers to as “Foot” at most live shows. The track features Michael Gallant, Senior Editor at Keyboard magazine, on Grand Piano, giving a whole new spin on such an already likeable song.

Months spent working away in the studio, Katie was holding out the best for her audience. Next Ride Out is finally here and it’s sure to give the singer’s fans, as well as brand new listeners, a ride to musical bliss with surprises in every nook and cranny of her songs. With the end of this CD’s making, the artist’s ride has just begun. This album is a coming-of-age, expressive, emotional, and delightful story of a rising and talented leading light. With Next Ride Out, Katie Garibaldi has arrived. Katie Garibaldi has a characteristic musical style that is all her own—wherein her fusion of equally pop- and country-tinged folk-rock gives her a distinct and edgy sound. At just 25, Katie has already released six albums, constantly tours the country, and runs her own record label—Living Dream. Katie Garibaldi is not just another “chick with a guitar.” She is a business-minded individual and creative music artist who has acquired a devoted fan base, mainly due to her engaging live shows, but also in part to her personal connection to listeners and outreach to the community.

Songsalive Interview---Steven Farro

Where are you from, originally and what brought you to Effingham? Originally from Boston MA, I moved to Effingham NH to get away from the city to some peace and quite

What style of music would you say you do? Rock, Pop, country

What do you enjoy best - songwriting or performing and why? Songwriting…. I cannot sing pure and simple

Who are your musical influences? My influences range from Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and that era also R&B, Blues, 80s rock, Jazz etc

Describe your favorite song you have written and why is it so special to you "Giver of a Broken Heart". I love the lyrics I think they convey a feeling I had with one particular relationship I knew could never work

What are your goals for the next 5 years musically speaking? To be able to write music for a living and hearing my lyrics done by a well known artist

Tell us about your recordings and what's in store next. Working on a pop version of Giver of a broken heart and working with a great female singer and promoting her

Where can we buy your music? www.myspace.com/stevenfarro and Moozikoo

What are your views about where the music industry is heading in your community, or on a global level? My community is mostly country and the style tends to be old country. Globally I don't know it seems like the industry is in a kind of funk trying to figure out where it should go from here

Anything pertinent you'd like to say about Songsalive! I am primarily a lyric writer and I am always looking to work with musicians who share a vision and goal of creating something special through song

Songsalive Interview--Susan Leigh Picking

Where are you from originally and what brought you to Southern California? I'm originally from Michigan. I moved here from Colorado. I am a flight attendant, and was based here out of training. When I moved here, I really liked it. The creative energy drew me in.

What style of music would you say you do? Folk/Acoustic/Americana.

What do you enjoy best - songwriting or performing and why? I really like them both. When I'm first inspired to write a song I feel like a conduit. It is like the songs come from elsewhere. It's almost as if I'm channeling, when I'm really in the zone. When I go in to rewriting phase, that is when the real craft of songwriting comes into play. It can be a mental challenge, like working out a puzzle.....wordsmithing.....figuring out chords....meter.....rhythm. It is a process where I lose myself. I lose track of time. I love performing too. It is a chance to share the the product....the artwork, and tell the stories behind it. Hopefully the songs speak to people in some way, whether it's the actual words, the hook, the melody, or the emotion of the performance. It is a communication and I want to connect and share with people.

Who are your musical influences? 70's folk rock legends:

James Taylor, Carole King, Van Morrison, Billy Joel, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan also Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, Norah Jones

Describe your favorite song you have written and why is it so special to you? The song "WHY". It is about raw emotion. It is universal, in that everyone can relate on some level? People have commented on how memorable the melody of the chorus is. It seems to stick in people's heads. In German it is called an "earworm".....that's the translation... it burrows it's way into your head.

What are your goals for the next 5 years musically speaking? Continue writing, performing and supporting myself. As far as writing, I aspire to get my songs in film and television. I would also love to write for other artists. Performing wise, I have some goals to play in festivals. I'm having fun performing and playing with other musicians. It is a great joy to play with other musicians. They always elevate my music to another level. Supporting myself financially with music, I'm working on marketing ideas to create revenue. I also want to give back and support younger artists especially those who don't have easy access to music.

Tell us about your recordings and what's in store next. My first recording is Down in Your Soul. It is a spiritual/soul based. The songs are about life and the lessons within. They all end up with a positive slant of getting through life. I perform at a lot of holistic health events, and this was something that I knew would be well received. It is relaxing music that is arranged in various Americana styles. I enlisted the help of Los Angeles based musician friends to create it. Next I have a 3 song demo coming out of Why, Wonder in The Wander, and Passing Tides. I will likely get out a full length CD within the year. I have the idea for a children's CD germinating in my brain right now. I look forward to this creative endeavor.

Where can we buy your music?

www.CDbaby.com/susanleighpicking

www.iTunes.com/susanleighpicking

www.digstation.com/susanleighpicking

What are your views about where the music industry is heading in your community, or on a global level? Music is often the program that gets cut in schools, as it is seen as an "extra". That saddens me greatly, as I've worked in schools and I know the benefits of music. It is therapeutic, in and of itself. It is an avenue of self expression for young people, it can help build self esteem. It is a way for kids to try something out in a safe environment.....to experiment in developing the self. On the global level, I see music as being a means for communication and peace. It is a universal language, in that some much can be conveyed without speaking the language of any song. There is universal joy, sorrow, love, light that can be shared and communicated through music and song. It is something everyone one wants around, and yet it is often where we try to cut corners in education, and it's the part of a budget in a movie that gets short changed, as well as all the issues with free downloading on the internet. I see music as always being an integral part of life and community. It is always a part of any celebration or ceremony. It marks important events. It is spiritual and it heals. I have been studying sound healing. We are all vibration, and music entrains and can bring about aligning ourselves to greater health and happiness.

Anything pertinent you'd like to say about Songsalive! I'm a new member, but am very excited about the opportunities. I attended an excellent workshop with Pamela Oland my first month. It was insightful and inspirational giving me constructive thoughts on approaching songwriting. I've learned different aspects of the industry, and find it to be a very helpful resource. it has been great for me in developing my craft and business acumen.

Songsalive! Interview--Juliet Lyons

Where are you from, originally and what brought you to your current city?

My current city is Vieux Fort, Saint Lucia, West Indies, in the Caribbean. I'm originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico, but made LA my home for seven years. I plan to be back in LA in another 1-2 years, and in the meantime am making the most of the stillness and simplicity of island life while I can.

What style of music would you say you do?

As a writer I write a lot of styles. I've had songs licensed in genres from dance to classical to southern blues. As an artist, my style is a blend of New Age, Chill Out, and Classical Crossover, with some global influences. It's a little Sarah Brightman, a little Enya, and a little Enigma spun together.

What do you enjoy best - songwriting or performing and why?

My favorite thing is recording vocals in the studio. Although you don't get the thrill of an audience, you also don't get the pressure. Being in the studio allows the freedom to experiment and get creative and if it doesn't work, you delete the take and it's erased from history!

Who are your musical influences?

A lot of the music I listen to doesn't have much influence on my writing. One of my all time favorites is Bob Marley, but you would never guess it listening to my first album! I also love Kylie Minogue but the only way you would guess that is when I wear my hair in a side ponytail!

I really love to listen to chill out, house, and dance for production ideas. I love Bjork for her fascinating and fearless arrangements, her orchestral elements, and the undeniable passion she emits in every note of her voice. I envy the Celtic Woman ladies their purity of tone, and I am gaga about Loreena McKennit whose voice is the epitome of ethereal, and whose music transports you to faraway places.

Describe your favorite song you have written and why is it so special to you?

Tough! You're Always There is an A/C song that I wrote in gratitude to my mother, I always get choked up when I sing that one. On my first album I guess I'd choose The Quest because of the lyrics which I wrote in one inspired shot. It's about following your heart and your dreams to the end, but to "live the journey," because "to reach the end's The End."

What are your goals for the next 5 years musically speaking?

5 years ago I wouldn't have known I'd be releasing an album, so I cannot know for sure. But what is for sure is that I will still be writing and singing - music has been and will always be my life. I have lots of goals but I prefer to keep them personal :)

Tell us about your recordings and what's in store next?

My debut album, My Siren Song, is being internationally released at the end of March 2009. As mentioned earlier, it's a blend of New Age, Chill Out, and Classical Crossover. I wrote and produced all the songs (with one co-write), and I'm simply excited to say I've done it! What's in store is promotion and marketing in the months to come. In the meantime I'm writing more songs, some for film/tv placements and music libraries, and some for my next album!

Where can we buy your music?

CDBaby, Itunes, and Amazon.

What are your views about where the music industry is heading in your community, or on a global level?

I think it's great that there are so many outlets for us indie artists nowadays but it is overwhelming to sort out the worthwhile ones from the time-wasters! Living on a tiny island in the middle of the Caribbean can make me feel quite removed from the action, but in cyberspace I'm able to be right in the middle of it.

Anything pertinent you'd like to say about Songsalive!

I had heard about it for years but didn't really know what it was about. I think it's a great community of writers and artists and I'm happy to be a part of it.

Songsalive! Interview--Elite Member--Kay Rose

Kay Rose

1. Where are you from, originally and what brought you to Eugene/Portland, Oregon?
I am originally from everywhere! My dad was a newspaper publisher who worked for a chain of newspapers and we moved constantly growing up, which contributed to my learning to entertain myself with songwriting! But my adult life was in several places in California. I was previously living outside of Arcata, CA for 10 years, where I found the solitude to finally transition my life more fully into music... from a previous high tech life in Sacramento, CA... and before that I was in Santa Maria, CA, where my parents still reside. I moved to Oregon a little over a year ago. I'd gone to high school in Portland and had always hoped to return some day to this lush green portion of the state. I now own a wonderful old house in Eugene that I have been refurbishing and recording in, but am in Portland half of the time with family and music as well.

2. What style of music would you say you do?
I call my music "moody soft rock". But when conforming to the selections on music sites it is either "adult contemporary" or divided between the pop and rock genres.

3. What do you enjoy best - songwriting or performing and why?
Perhaps I enjoy writing best because it is the most natural thing for me. It is such an amazing place that I'm continually drawn to. I have thought in music and songs my whole life, waking up with melodies and songs... hearing ideas as I am experiencing things in life and having amazing surges of creativity surrounding special or hard times. It is always fun to talk to other songwriters about this muse that we seem to have been born with. I feel like I didn't chose to be a songwriter, but it chose me! But I also love to perform. It can be very sweet and powerful... touching or affecting other people. And though I was very shy about it early on and battled some performance demons, I've grown to really enjoy the roller coaster rush of emotional expression I feel when I perform.

4. Who are your musical influences?
Definitely I was very affected by early exposure to Karla Bonoff, Joni Mitchell, Carole King... even Karen Carpenter. I thought it was so amazing that Karen was often playing drums, while singing those amazingly smooth vocals. In recent years I've related to artists such as Paula Cole, Suzanne Vega, and Aimee Mann. I'm also really interested in lots of great writers, like Burt Bacharach, Dianne Warren, Jimmy Webb, Elvis Costello, and more. And most recently, all this amazing independent music is really expanding the horizons.

5. Describe your favorite song you have written and why is it so special to you.
My favorite song on this CD is probably the song, "Lost In Love". I wrote it some years back on the plane ride home after visiting with a long time girl friend who is a wonderful artist and writer, though never finding time to really pursue it while in a turbulent relationship. We shared our deep aspirations and our struggles to achieve them at times because we'd been a little too devoted tot he loved ones in our lives. I've hoped sharing this song will perhaps help other women, girls, or really anyone... who may be loving a little too much that they are lose their own dreams!

6. What are your goals for the next 5 years musically speaking?
I'd like to record at least a couple more solo albums. But even more so, I'd really like to write for other artists, as well as have songs used for film or television. I'm interested in co-writing and collaboration with others as well.

7. Tell us about your recordings and what's in store next.
This current CD was largely recorded in my own home studio, with some help from some wonderful friends. I got flustered by the time and expense of going into studios, so I learned to engineer and mix so I could have more creative freedom and control over the results. I actually purchased a full drum kit and all the mics and set up a drum room in my basement studio. Then my awesome touring drummer friend, Danny Montgomery, flew in and we had a great time recording on our own terms. Then Jeff Pevar got involved and he added his amazing playing and helped with some production on a number of tunes. It was an incredible learning experience. I've already started the many of the tracks for the next CD. I'd like to get a little more raw feel in the next record. I really wanted full instrumentation on this album, but I'd like to simplify a little on the next one and try to capture more live feel.

8. Where can we buy your music?
You can purchase the complete album or tracks at www.CDBaby.com/kayrose or from MyMusicBlaster at the bottom of my www.MySpace.com/KayRoseSongs page. It is also available via ITunes and a variety of other online stores.

9. What are your views about where the music industry is heading in your community, or on a global level?
I'm a little open to see what is really to come. I've heard that people aren't buying CD's anymore, yet they do buy them at live shows. It seems that they just aren't buying as many major labels CD's any more and that the musical playing field is becoming more equal, with independent music gaining more respect and visibility. I'm finding friends and family are preferring to buy independent or local music where they can be more in touch with an artist. Yes, the trend seems that everything is going internet or digital, and yes, a lot of people do just buy a song for their IPod. But that is great because now there are a multitude of places that artists can easily directly sell music online. Yet my experiences also tell me people are looking more for real, raw, personal experiences! I've experienced a level of frustration over performance opportunities, with more musicians and seemingly less venues. But I feel that just requires performers have to become more creative and experienced in doing their own bookings or setting up their own house concerts, performances, benefits, etc.

10. Anything pertinent you'd like to say about Songsalive.
I wish that I lived close to a chapter, because I would love to participate in more in real time! But I am just beginning to explore more of the resources the group makes available and it is a very remarkable organization led by an amazingly inspiring female artist / musician / business woman... Gilli! Thanks so much for the opportunities you are opening up for others!

I do not have any one special event coming up, but I keep an up to date calendar on my MySpace page and if featured, it would be great to point people there!! www.MySpace.com/KayRoseSongs

Songsalive! Interview--Elite Member--Christie McCarthy

Four pillars support the undeniable talent of Christie McCarthy: singer, songwriter, performer, recording artist. The Singer in Christie has "one of the nicest voices anywhere", writes Jon Galucki of the Athens Red & Black News. Rich, powerful, burnished, tonal. The Songwriter has won awards and appears on several compilations, including the Sharper Image Sirens of Song (along with Norah Jones and Diana Krall), Target, Cocktail Hour, and Wells Fargo's Women Trailblazers. The Performer offers up a complex coin: Heads, her classy 5-piece jazz ensemble; Tales, the guitar-toting, relaxed, irreverent troubadour. The Recording Artist has released 4 CDs: Winter (2006), Everyday Real (2003), The Fantasy Sessions (2000), and Serendipity (1998). William Friar of the Contra Costa Times calls Christie's sound "rich, soulful, and tastefully understated." Originally from Los Angeles, Christie lives in the Bay Area and spends her time between Northern and Southern Calfornia.

1. Where are you from, originally and what brought you to Berkeley?
Originally from Los Angeles. Moved to Berkeley to attend UC Berkeley.

2. What style of music would you say you do?

A blend of Americana & Jazz.

3. What do you enjoy best - songwriting or performing and why?

Songwriting and performing are like Yin and Yang. Songwriting is an introspective process, a time when I feel raw, curious and close to God. Performing is exciting, spontaneous and fosters connection with others. They both bring out diverse things inside of me that I love and need.

4. Who are your musical influences?
Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young

5. Describe your favorite song you have written and why is it so special to you?

My favorite song is called River Stone and I like it because it tells the story of hearts and egos softening over time. I wrote it with my grandparents in mind.

6. What are your goals for the next 5 years musically speaking?

Success!
7. Tell us about your recordings and what's in store next.
I've recorded 4 CDs to date: 3 original and 1 cover. There's another one on the way in 2007!

8. Where can we buy your music?

Online--
CD Baby(1st CD), CD Baby (2nd CD), Amazon, iTunes
9. What are your views about where the music industry is heading in your community, or on a global level?
I hope we are coming back to a time of more substance in music. With all that's going on in the world, maybe we can expect a singer-songwriter revolution, reminiscent of the 60's and '70's. Music that touches hearts and souls is what's needed. It would be great if the record industry could step out ahead of the curve and foster that.
10. Anything pertinent you'd like to say about Songsalive!

Gilli is an inspiration.

Interview

1. Where are you from, originally and what brought you to your current city?

I grew up overseas for the first twelve years of my life. I lived in Indonesia, Singapore, Argentina, and in Dubai. After that I spent the next seven years in Marin County, California before going back overseas at age 18 to spend a year in Paris, France. After college in Arizona, I came to Los Angeles to pursue my creative itch.

2. What style of music would you say you do?

The style of my music is a fusion of spoken word poetry and conscious hip-hop. HipHoPoetry if you will.

3. What do you enjoy best - songwriting or performing and why?

I enjoy performing a bit more than song writing only because it is nice to know that there are people who understand and appreciate the ideas, efforts and skill that go into the songwriting.

4. Who are your musical influences?

My musical influences are anyone who can combine lyrical talent with a positive, uplifting message. Common, Talib Kweli, Krs-One.

5. Describe your favorite song you have written and why is it so special to you?

My favorite song just maybe called "Runaways" by Sage Francis. In it, using his incredible lyrical rhyming schemes, he describes the mindset and lifestyle of growing up in a foster home. It was inspiring to me as I work with at risk youth as well.

6. What are your goals for the next 5 years musically speaking?

My goal in the next 5 years is to create Rhymecology programs across the country where we help "at risk" youth and incarcerated youth express themselves through writing poetry, rap and lyrics.

7. Tell us about your recordings and what's in store next.

My music has a message. While I pride myself in my lyrics, I want to use my talent to uplift and remind people that there is more to the art form and life for that matter than bling bling and guns. While I grew up listening to the "golden era" of rap, my goal is to connect with anybody who thinks or feels deeply, that could be clients of mine in Compton, California or my parents friends in Newport Beach, California, whose only knowledge of hip hop comes from fast food and shoe commercials.

8. Where can we buy your music?

My music can be bought at rhymecology.com, or cdbaby.com.

9. What are your views about where the music industry is heading in your community, or on a global level?

To me, in a hip-hop sense, the industry could not be further away from the essence. Of course it is bigger than ever, in commercials, in sporting events and movies, however the message is mixed up and backwards and it needs to be straightened out because it has such a heavy influence on the youth listening.

10. Anything pertinent you'd like to say about Songsalive!

I feel like Songsalive! is an amazing company who are helping artists for all the RIGHT reasons. For the art, for the love of music and I am glad that they have taken an interest in my words and messages.

INTERVIEW

1. Where are you from, originally and what brought you to Sydney?
I was born and bred in the western suburbs of Sydney Australia, though I have been overseas many times and for long periods, I have always felt Sydney was "home".

2. What style of music would you say you do?
My passion is the blues both traditional and contemporary but at the same time I like to take "bluesy" elements and put them in a classical setting.

3. What do you enjoy best - songwriting or performing and why?
I like the feeling of completion that comes from finishing a composition/arrangement but I also love the feeling of satisfaction from a well-received performance.

4. Who are your musical influences?
My musical influences range from Willie Brown, B.B. King, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Steve Reich, George Gershwin, Dr. Garth Paine, Dr Bruce Crossman, Webern and Stravinsky.

5. Describe your favorite song you have written and why is it so special to you.
A special composition that I recently completed is a classical minimalist piece called "The Ascent: for Jim". It is constructed using minimalist techniques with the minor blues scale. It also has a special attachment for me as when I was composing it my friend Jim was dying of cancer. He passed away in December 07.

6. What are your goals for the next 5 years musically speaking?

I am in my third year of a Bachelor of Music at the University of Western Sydney which I hope to finish next year. Then I hope to travel to Mississippi.

7. Tell us about your recordings and what's in store next.
I have finished a piece called "Plastique: for Dr Preketes" a piece using DADGAD tuning on the guitar with natural harmonics and percussive tapping. In my next composition for university, I hope to use a maori koauau or a Bolivian Isoka in conjunction with a blues/rock band.

8. Where can we buy your music?
One of my compositions "Manorina Melanophrys" is available from Acoustic Fuel at http://www.acousticfuel.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=282

9. What are your views about where the music industry is heading in your community, or on a global level?
Having just finished an essay on the digitization of the music industry, it appears that even though this digitization has enabled musicians to take a large control of their creative output, a very large percent of the industry is still controlled by 4 or 5 corporations world wide.

10. Anything pertinent you'd like to say about Songsalive!
Songsalive is an empowering organization, run by dedicated and unselfish people, particularly Gilli Moon (US) and Roxanne Kiely (AUS).

INTERVIEW

1. Where are you from, originally and what brought you to New York?

I’m originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan. I went to USC, so I lived in Los Angeles for four years, and then headed North to Alaska for about a year and a half to write and work. I then moved to New York about 12 years ago to pursue various aspects of a career in entertainment from songwriting to television production and photography.

2. What style of music would you say you do?

I would say my music is a combination of adult contemporary and folk-rock with classic rock and country elements.

3. What do you enjoy best - songwriting or performing and why?

I like recording best, writing second, and performing third. I love the creative musical process and the combination of planning and surprise that can happen in a studio.

4. Who are your musical influences?
I am greatly influenced by classical composers-like Bach and Mahler. I love how Bach’s music has such a symmetry and inherent peace. Also, since I grew up in the midwest, I’m very influenced by Classic Rock-Led Zep, The Beatles, Hendrix, Van Halen, and Folk-Rock like Crosby Stills Nash & Young, and Peter, Paul and Mary. And, although I rarely admit it, I did have a few years in Junior High School where I loved Heavy Metal- Iron Maiden, Ozzy, Metallica, and even Yngwie Malmsteen!

5. Describe your favorite song you have written and why is it so special to you.
I don’t think I have one favorite. Some of my favorites are: “Thank You” by Led Zeppelin, Bach’s Prelude No. 1 in C Major, Ozzy’s “Goodbye to Romance”, and “Puff the Magic Dragon” to name a few.

6. What are your goals for the next 5 years musically speaking?
In the next 5 years, I would like to sell several of my songs, and continue to write and record. Perhaps some film work- either scoring or usage of my songs.

7. Tell us about your recordings and what's in store next.
I am constantly writing and recording at a studio here in New York City. I am shopping songs, while writing and recording new ones.

8. Where can we buy your music?
Please visit www.schteingart.com and ask for info.

9. What are your views about where the music industry is heading in your community, or on a global level?
I have been to many industry events discussing the dangers of music piracy and music on the web, but I think it can be a very advantageous aspect of the age in which we live-especially for songwriters. I think that there are a lot of genres now, and still many opportunities for hybrids. I would really love to see modern music and more popular genres create a greater link with classical music. I think that younger audiences could really benefit from a greater education in, and exposure to classical music.

10. Anything pertinent you'd like to say about Songsalive!
I really like Songsalive! It’s a great avenue for communicating with other songwriters, keeping in touch with the community, and getting your songs heard. Moreover, as the New York chapter co-coordinator, I’d like to invite all songwriters in the New York City area, even if you’re just visiting, to stop by our workshop and showcase- the first Tuesday of every month at “Session 73” (73rd and 1st Ave). INTERVIEW

1. Where are you from, originally and what brought you to Los Angeles?
I grew up in LA's southbay, then left for many years - Oregon, Utah, Texas - always with the plan to work my way back here. I returned and settled in Redondo Beach about eight years ago. It's definitely my meant to be there spot.

2. What style of music would you say you do?
I consider my music to be contemporary folk music. Very lyric-driven.

3. What do you enjoy best - songwriting or performing and why?
I enjoy the songwriting most - it is so energizing, but the rush of performing a song for the first time is right up there! I have always had music in my life, but didn't get serious about writing and performing until about three years ago. About five years ago I came down with rheumatoid arthritis and spent over a year with very little ability to move my hands. The guitar sat still for a long time. When I got the fingers moving again, I decided there would be no more wasted time, and the miracle of every little thing that has come my way musically is amazing to me.

4. Who are your musical influences?
I grew up with all of the great folk artists like Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Joan Baez, Gordon Lightfoot, Paul SImon. I am very influenced by Bonnie Raitt, Patty Griffin, Kevin Welch, Eliza Gilkyson, Dar Williams.

5. Describe your favorite song you have written and why is it so special to you.
I have a song called "Raised You to Fly" that, admittedly, is way too long, but describes exactly for me much of what it was like to raise a couple of kids by myself, then launch them into the world. It speaks specifically to my youngest, who is a lovely, amazing dancer.

6. What are your goals for the next 5 years musically speaking?
My goal for the next five years is just to do as much music as possible and explore the possibilities. I would like to keep on generating some income from my music.

7. Tell us about your recordings and what's in store next.
My recordings are home studio. I hope to get more sophisticated in the future! (although it is a great learning process.)

8. Where can we buy your music?
I have a CD on CDBaby at http://cdbaby.com/cd/kayereznick

9. What are your views about where the music industry is heading in your community, or on a global level?
In my local music community it is wonderful. My friends often say that I have (at last) found my tribe! It is a closeness and support that I will continue to foster, and that often leads to more opportunities and musical growth for me. I'm not planning on being a rock star, so I probably have a less global view of the industry than some. Success to me is to play often, write always, and share the experience with other musicians.

10. Anything pertinent you'd like to say about Songsalive!I love the spirit of SongsAlive.
It provides avenues to learn for me that I might otherwise not have found. It is also amazing to me that in a big city like LA, SongsAlive helps to build a recognizable musical community. Almost anywhere I go now related to music I see musicians I have met through SongsAlive. Gilli is a great inspiration for pursuing your goals and dreams, & helping others to do so as well.

INTERVIEW

1. Where are you from, originally and what brought you to New York?
I was born and raised here in New York City. And here I remain - the center of the known universe. :)

2. What style of music would you say you do?
Mostly Rock & Roll but I also compose underscore instrumentals for TV and film.

3. What do you enjoy best - songwriting or performing and why?
That's a tough toss up because while there is nothing quite like the rush of a great live performance there is also something extremely romantic about the epic nature of the three minute song form, especially when you know you've written a good one!

4. Who are your musical influences?
Brian Wilson, Van Dyke Parks, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Burt Bacharach, 60's Pop, Surf, Motown, DaVinci, Walt Disney, Paul Revere and the Raiders, British Invasion, R. Buckminster Fuller - I could go on.

5. Describe your favorite song you have written and why is it so special to you
Probably my song, "Feelin' More Like Christmas" - because it is my most successful. It's also a GREAT song!

6. What are your goals for the next 5 years musically speaking?
To increase the number of live shows I do each year and to get some of my back logged catalogue recorded, finally!

7. Tell us about your recordings and what's in store next.

I have a full lenght CD, "ac-ro-nym..." with the rock and roll trio PHAM!. A Christmas single, "(There's Nothing Like) A Polish Christmas - recently nominated for Song of the Year by the Polka Music Hall of Fame. A newly released 6 song EP "Do You Wanna Dance" - cover songs for my "City Rhythm" project. I am currently finishing the next PHAM! CD - "Rock & Roll Dance Party" for a summer 2008 release and will begin work on my personal, "Songwriter" CD sometime this summer.

8. Where can we buy your music?

You can buy my music from my SNOCAP store at my two MySpace sites: www.myspace.com/phamband and www.myspace.com/cityrhythmband as well as at CD Baby - under Bobby "Guitar" Porembski & PHAM!. And of course, I-Tunes.

9. What are your views about where the music industry is heading in your community, or on a global level?
It has been heading in the Artist DIY direction for a long time both locally and globally. The majors, however will never completely go away because it takes that BIG promotion machine and lots of cash to really break an act/artist big, In the meantime the business is currently wide open for anyone who wants to make great music and share it with the rest of the world. The web has seen to that.

10. Anything pertinent you'd like to say about Songsalive!
As a professor of Music Industry one of the things I like to try and instill in my students is to use thier art to make the world a better place. I think Songsalive! is a great vehicle for students and seasoned pros alike to help raise the level of this great art form we all love so much. If we can use our songs to transform the world, so much the better. It's all about networking and co-operation and that's what Songalive! is all about!
